Smart guides in Inkscape?

Postby sleidia » Mon Aug 27, 2007 8:53 am

Hi :)

Does anyone know if there is the equivalent of the smart guides (from Illustrator) in Inkscape?
I find it a hassle to place objects with Inkscape.
I used to do ctrl+u on Illustrator, which helped a lot.

Thanks for the help :)

I think you'll find the snap settings in the document properties to be the closet thing to Illustrators Smart Guides. I'm not sure there is a hotkey to toggle snap, but in most cases you can hold Shift to temporarily disable snap.

I thought about this a few days ago. And I resolve problem this way:
- create a layer named "guides" and move it to the bottom
- draw anything you want (for example lines starting from one point for perspective)
- set color of objects to something light (I usually use light blue)
- set snapping in document properties (I don't remember names of checkboxes now, but I'm sure you'll find apriopriate)

When you don't need giudes - just turn visibility of this layer off - it will not be exported or printed.

If Inkscape had Smart Guides, I call it a Adobe Illustrator murderer. Make it so, I need it, I want it, and workarounds aren't my friend. I beg of thee!

Implementing smart dynamic guides has been on my to-do list for quite some time already, but I first wanted to get the snapping right. We're not quite there yet, but things are steadily improving (test a prerelease of the upcoming v0.47, if you haven't done so already). If only I could quit my day-time job :D

There is a shortcut to turning snapping on and off: % (Shift+5 on most keyboards).
