Hi all,
I'm new to Inkscape and really appreciate this software, and this very helpful forum.
I like the versatility of the Object dialog but I definitly can not get it to work as I would expect. I think there are some bugs in it but I wanted to check it with you first. I'm probably missing something.
Inkscape 0.92.3 (2405546, 2018-03-11) on Windows 8.1 (Inkscape preferences reset) :
Create a new blank file with 3 empty layers :
- File > New
- Maj+Ctrl+L
- click Button "Add a new Layer" (with "new layer above" option) twice : now we have three (empty) layers
Within Layer Dialog :
- Drag layer 1 into top layer 3
- Drag layer 2 into top layer 3
- Layer 1 and 2 are now sublayers of layer 3 as expected
- Ctrl+Z twice
Within object dialog :
- Drag layer 1 into layer 3 : won't work : layer 1 is now between layer 3 and 2 but not a sublayer of 3
- Ctrl+Z
- drag layer 2 into layer 3 : will work : layer 2 now sub layer of 3
- drag layer 1 into layer 3 : Layer 2 is no more sub-layer of 3 and layer 1 is located beetween layer 3 and 2 once again. Unexpected behaviour.
Is this behaviour occuring on your configurations ?
Moving layers in Object dialog : strange behaviour
Re: Moving layers in Object dialog : strange behaviour
Hhmm, I seem to have the correct behavior (version 0.92.3 with Windows 7 Pro). Sub-layers are created, as expected.

Re: Moving layers in Object dialog : strange behaviour
I can confirm erratic behavior when dragging /reordering within the Objects dialog.
Win 8.1 64, Inkscape 0.92.2.
It is easy to see the issue by having the xml editor open while using the Objects dialog.

Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1
The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Re: Moving layers in Object dialog : strange behaviour
Hi ,
Thank you to Brynn and Tylerdurden for the replies.
I would have appreciated some more replies before reporting the bug in the Launchpad Bug Tracker. I'm quite sure this report would be relevant but apparently not everyone is confronted with the problem...
I will probably report this bug next week. Until that, every comment is welcome !
Thanks to all.

So far, Windows 8.1 appears to be the common denominator....

Re: Moving layers in Object dialog : strange behaviour
Hi,
I made some additional tests with inkscape 0.92.3
Same erratic behaviour on Windows 10.

Re: Moving layers in Object dialog : strange behaviour
Hi all,
Same unexpected behaviour on Windows 7 SP1.
Reported the bug in launchpad : https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1808648
Thank you again.
PS : I tried to make to make a gif capture of the problem in order to post it here but it turned out that when the dialog box is inside Screen2Gif, ShareX (and other softs) frame, the drag'n'drop is no more possible. Same behaviour with these screen recorders and Layer dialog box in Gimp...
