Gradient curve editor and more (and less)- stale WIP request

Postby Daghead » Sat Aug 09, 2008 6:43 pm

SVG Image

That's 100% vector above. Twas made in XP, the font is a little messed up in Ubuntu, and also appears a little altered 'ere in Firefox under Vista. Please download and enjoy pulling it apart.

So the main features in this to-be request (that I started and stopped working on about 2 years ago) would have been the addition of a gradient curve editor, the ability to edit stops on-object (now implemented), the ability to rearrange stops (seemingly, surprisingly not yet implemented) which could be toggled on and off via this button: Image, and the movement of the dropper tool from the toolbox to the color picker as yet another color model (where it should have been from the start), with added features (I've already made a feature request for this one). I just noticed that I forgot to add an integer field for precise stop placement. Oh well.

Here's an older version of the above SVG rigged to demonstrate the curve editor's hide/show ability when you click the "Toggle current layer visibility" button in Inkscape: http://daghead.googlepages.com/UPNewfilldemo.svg

Also here's the word document that was meant to accompany the image in its feature request as a thorough guide: http://daghead.googlepages.com/UPNewFillGuide.doc. It's not finished, and is less than half-revised- Just in case you're interested.

SO! if it sounds good enough and you might want to whip any or all of it into shape and request it, please, consider it your own. I'm never going to finish it.

Thank you for you attention.

Off topic/ really unimportant: The window icons of Inkscape's logo were originally the only raster parts in the image and when I opened it today after a while of not opening it the source image was missing. So I replaced it with an SVG I had of Inkscape's logo: http://daghead.googlepages.com/Inkscapelogo.svg which for some reason became messed up when imported. So I cut out the messed up parts and that's why the Inkscape logo looks lousy there/ why did it import wierd/ thx

Looks like an ID clash. This problem is fixed in development builds (bug 168626).

I really like your idea. The catch with your system is that SVG doesn't support 'curves' to describe the gradient. Transitions from stop to stop are always linear. So Inkscape would need to create additional stops to simulate a curve. I don't doubt it could be done, but I think it would be a lot of work.

I agree that you should be able to rearrange stops on the canvas.

There's nothing to stop you from loggin this request yourself on Launchpad.
