Introduction to Inkscape

What is Inkscape? I have heard some things about this but I don't know which is which. Please help me and tell me what is Inkscape really about.

Inkscape is about creating vector images in SVG format.

Particulary effective for cartoon drawing, or any kind of line art, or even sketching, if you have a graphics tablet. Not very well suited for photos, or raster formats (JPG, GIF, PNG, etc.) but there are certain ways to use them, if necessary.
