I've created a shape I like, but the three components get colored differently and I'm not sure how to research the problem as I don't understand the terminology.
-Two of the objects are paths, and the paths themselves change color when I select a color.
-The other is the issue, and in the 'Objects' list it's a 'rect,' and when I select a color the edges stay black and the color gets applied to inside the (two) rectangles.
-*I've also somehow linked two rectangles (one is a flipped duplicate), and am unable to break them apart. I've tried to 'ungroup,' to 'split apart,' and to select the 'rect' line in the objects list to see the component parts, but it seems solidly one item.
I suppose I'd like to convert the rect back to a path, if that's possible. Not sure it is...

Re: Not clear on terminology
Feel free to attach an example file for us to examine.
Also, I'd go through the tutorials in the help menu, so terms become more familiar.

Have a nice day.
I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1
The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/
