My Avatar - A Simple Escher

Postby nils » Tue Aug 19, 2008 4:24 am

With Apologies to Mr. Escher, I used one of his simpler works for Inkscape practice:

This stuff is REALLY hard. I know mine isn't an exact copy, and hardly perfect, but I won't touch it again, hence under "finished" not WIP. I always admired Escher's work, but actually trying to do it myself gives it a whole new perspective... pun not intended.

Nice work. I assume it was hand-traced, as opposed to using any functions to define the paths.

I think it could be fun to create an exact replica of that object, with the shading and lines.

On a side note, here's a great tip for creating smoother, more easily controlled curves that I think your drawing could benefit from - http://www.illustratorworld.com/forum/v ... .php?t=812

Thanks for the tipp, I'll try to figure out what that is about. I am still very much a beginner. :)

And, yeah, if you can create an absolutely exact replica of that thing in Inkscape, I think not only are you very good, I think that would aake for an excellent tutorial.

It looks great, nice work. A tip for the actual avatar image: the red is a bit high contrast next to the blue. Maybe go for a bit more muted colors.

Yeah, to be picky, red and blue bleed when they touch so they're often not good to use together. Having worked at a University it always amazed me to see academics using red text on a blue Powerpoint slide--it's a big no-no.

Here's an example of how to position nodes for this shape:
ImageImage

Notice I have only placed them in horizontal and vertical positions (except where they touch the boundary of the circle). This encourages much smoother curves.

Whilst I positioned the nodes by referring to the drawing, a smarter person might have noticed the rough pattern they formed and created a best-fit curve to more accurately guide the positioning of those nodes.

In early versions my lines spilled outside of the sphere and I used a circle to trim it back. Also the Orange object is an exact copy of the pink object, only flipped horizontally.

Nice - Could you post a closeup of the node placement of the center spiral?

I have so much to learn yet :D

I think this is one of the images that would be much easier to do using Spiro paths in the development version of Inkscape. Try it, it's fun :)

I would be very impressed if it could indeed create this object since it needs to be able to distort the shape to create a spherical perspective. I'd love to test it, but I really can't see how to use the effect :) Perhaps the recent Windows build doesn't have it implemented properly yet, as the effect has no options except to make it visible or not.

Bah, ignore my post. I got confused about how Spiro paths work. You're right, it should make it easier.

UPDATE: But it doesn't :)
