I have a picture with a green area, a blue area and a yellow area. I like to split this picture into 3 objects of those 3 colors.
so What I actually want to do is to select the colors area's seperately. Can this be done?
How to split a picture into different objects?

Yes it can be done. In fact it can't be done any other way (ignoring gradients and pattern fills).
Re: How to split a picture into different objects?
I would make three copies of image and then clip each one so that only one color area is visible. To clip picture: draw a ractangle/circle/whatever on top of it -> select your picture -> select your rectangle/circle/etc with SHIFT PRESSED -> from menu select Object-Clip-Set

I'm guessing that you mean bitmap image by word "picture". If you mean vector picture then earser tool from development version of Inkscape might be useful.

Yes it's a bitmap. I tried to do it with the trace bitmap. Though I don't think it will work. I will have a look at the earser tool.
thanks.
thanks.

If it's a bitmap use clipping paths as I described it above, earser tool works only on vectors.

Here is a good tutorial on this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Broe2mZ84k

Ohh... In this case trace tool will be much more useful, but I can't tell you which stettings will give you the best results. This looks like some serious work, I'm a big fan of Inkscape , but wouldn't software like ACD Canvas with GIS extension suit better for such purposes?

Use the Paint Bucket Tool.
Import the bitmap (picture) into inkscape. Select the bucket tool. Click each of Colours/Layers you want in turn. Set the resultants objects fill colours to that of the key. You'll probably want to turn off the stroke.
You might need to click in more than one place for the bits you want if the layer's split; you can group those together.
When you've done, delete the bitmap (or put in in a hidden layer).
Re: How to split a picture into different objects?
I tried using trace bitmap and the results weren't too good. The problem is that you need to use a large number of scans to ensure it doesn't make some of the legend items the same colour. But with so many scans things become very blurry.
I hate to recommend a commecial solution, but VectorMagic.com does a very good job converting this image to vector--at least as good as you can expect given the source. If you can get a larger version of this image it will do better again.

Thanks for trying. I find the bitmap tracing in inkscape not working very well. I will try autotrace tomorrow. Vector magic works very well. There's an online free converting possibility.
