Hiring out SVG/Inkscape work?

Postby DRobs86 » Sun Jul 12, 2015 5:54 am

We are launching a very small side business where we cut out wood art based on my wife's designs. We have been using Inkscape and have gotten some good results, but it takes us a while to get the project ready to generate cutter toolpaths. We start the process by my wife drawing the design on paper, which she can usually do in 3 to 5 minutes. It then might take me a couple hours to get it into Inkscape with proper symmetry and what not. I want to explore the possibility of outsourcing the process of putting her designs into SVG format.

Is this something that a website like Fiverr would be reliable for, or would I be wasting my time there? Usually the drawings are very basic and simple, just enough to communicate what she wants designed, but they might include a number of difficult curves.

Sometimes the designs include text. If someone made an SVG file for me outside of inkscape that included text, would I be able to open it in inkscape and then manipulate the font with the text tool in inkscape?

Thanks!

I had never heard of Fiverr before, so I looked it up, to find out what it does. It seems to me like that would be a perfect solution. But I would do some research first - not on Fiverr - to find out what the market considers a fair fee or payment. Then compare that to what you see on Fiver. Also, I think you might want to find out how they handle copyright/trademark issues. Personally I would be looking to make contracts "on paper" just to protect myself and my products. But I guess a lot of people are fairly lax about that.

If someone made an SVG drawing outside of Inkscape that includes text, the text should be editable with Inkscape. I can't say for sure, but I think probably.

That's a hell of an attitude from a graphic designer view. Basically you ask for "screw driving", while those who can do the job and willing to help are wasting their own time creating their own work, own ideas. In that sence those who actually work for such offerings, are hardly connected/in close relation with your masterpieces.
But who am I to judge.
You can also try reddit's appropriate section here, searcing for graphic "designers".

I would suggest to get a better grasp of using inkscape, on the long run it is much more rewarding.

If that's clearly an svg, then there should be no problem.
But if it was derived from a pdf file, it can produce weird results.

Another "If":

If someone made an SVG drawing outside of Inkscape that includes text, and the text is not part of an embedded raster image, the text should be editable with Inkscape. (SVG files can contain both vector and raster content.) I can't say for sure, but I think probably.
