Strange behaveour of guides

Postby ErikTiePie » Wed Feb 11, 2009 1:40 am

Hi all,

I see some strange things with certain guides, might be a bug, might be me doing something wrong.

I run Windows XP SP2 on a system with a portrait monitor, 1200 x 1600 (actually, two of them, next to each other).

I run Inkscape 0.46, april 2008 and also a dev version: Inkscape20607-0902010619 and I see similar things in both of them.

Start Inkscape, maximize Inkscape and then draw a horizontal guide into the drawing. Move your mouse on the guide, until it changes colour (red in my case). Now double-click, which brings up a small dialog to change the properties of the guide. Give it an angle of 1 degree and click OK.

observation 1:
The guide is now drawn with an angle. It's drawn without any antialiasing, clearly showing where the "jumps" are. Now start moving the mouse on and off the guide, for a number of times. It will be redrawn each time, either in red or blue (with default settings). However, the position where the "jumps" are change with each redraw. It doesn't change the overall position and angle of the guide, but it looks like if the red one is drawn with different parameters than the blue one.
I see this in both versions of Inkscape

Observation 2, which I can only reproduce in the dev build:
Pick up the guide and drag it off the drawing at the top side of the drawing, drag it with some velocity, not too slow. Normally this removes/deletes the guide. However, in the dev build, the guide can't keep up with the mouse pointer and as soon as the mouse pointer reaches the upper end of the drawing and enters the ruler area, the guide stops moving, still a couple of pixels inside the drawing. If you now release the mouse button, you end the "guide move action". moving the mouse to the guide again, will start moving the guide again, although no mouse button is pressed. If you move too fast, you will loose the guide again after a few pixels, but bringing your mouse back, you can pick it up again. If you now click again, the guide may jump to a complete different location.

Observation 1 doesn't bother me too much, observation 2 seems a bug to me.

Anyone who can reproduce this/comment on this, whether this should be put on launchpad?

Couldn't reproduce 1, on XP SP3 1900x1200, 0.46; But thanks for mentioning how to angle a guide! Very helpful.
Couldn't reproduce 2 on same system with the 16/1 dev build.
