Erase

Postby DrT » Tue Nov 08, 2016 7:29 am

Hi!

I am a newbie using Inkscape 0.91 running under Windows 7 Pro (64-bit).

I imported an SVG file (the attached “My_File”), which was created with another program (“Graph”), which displays an image of the Cartesian coordinates and I wanted to delete some parts.

I read a post titled “erase/cut/delete part of object” dated March 25, 2012 and the post replies (http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=11770), which is about what I want to do and which described 3 methods for doing it.

I tried “erase”method and it didn't work. Here's what I did:

1 - After I imported the file, the image was automatically selected.
2 - I used “erase”, which automatically deselected the image, and I selected “cut out from objects”.
3 - With the “left-mouse” clicked, I “painted” over the area I wanted to erase.
4 - When I released the mouse, the “painted” area disappeared and nothing happened.

What am I doing wrong?

By the way, I tried exactly the same with the file attached to the original post (the attached “Post_File”), and it worked!

Hi.

Probably the reason is your drawing is constructed of 2 noded open segments not encountering any area.
If you convert strokes to paths, it should work.

Dear Lazur,

Thank you for your reply.

Excuse my ignorance but how do I "convert strokes to path"?

By Ctrl+Alt+C but I'm doubt that's really what you are after.

Unlike with rasters, editing the structure of the drawing itself is the preferred way =editing nodes.

Dear Lazur,

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

For my purpose, the easiest way was to delete the relevant XML elements.
