Off topic:
I'm a little uncomfortable with being "solicited" to respond to a topic. This is an open forum so its kinda rude to single out someone in such a way. I might be the most active participant on this forum, but it doesn't make my opinion more valuable than anyone else's. I also don't like feeling obligated to respond to a post because I've been addressed to do so.That aside--I don't actually understand the need to have one overall default style for a drawing. Does anyone ever actually create a drawing where a majority of the objects are one colour? So I think your idea has merit.
I'm a little tired at the moment so I had trouble following all the details you had described. But this would be my preference:
- [SET DEFAULT] - Sets the default style for a newly created object based on the currently selected object.
- [TOGGLE] - Toggle the current tool between using the last used style, or the currently set default style.

I'm a little tired at the moment so I had trouble following all the details you had described. But this would be my preference:I don't see a need to have a button to apply the default style to an already created object--it's too easy to simply copy and paste the style. I could probably live with "last used style" option also, if I could quickly and easily set the style for the next object each time using the [SET DEFAULT] button each time.
- [SET DEFAULT] - Sets the default style for a newly created object based on the currently selected object.
- [TOGGLE] - Toggle the current tool between using the last used style, or the currently set default style.
ok .......
no problem
[Make properties Current] (or set to default ...whatever you want to call it)
is the main and most important function of those i have proposed for this area...
But i was referring more to the new functionality i introduced to this article to have both current Properties and selected object properties displayed in the same area...(currently in inkscape there is 2 seperate areas for this...) I was not saying that the second area should be deleted... but having both default and current properties displayed in the same area makes sense as when a object is selected the default properties would seldom be displayed or need to be in another area...as a single button next to the current object properties area makes allot more sense...
anyway.....
In the same area,,,,,

The internet is a strange place to be honest: that it's so innately anonymous that people feel confronted simply because they are directly addressed is slightly bizarre.
This is an open community--imagine if every single registered member and anonymous users decided to address me directly in every post. I think you would agree that it would be a little selfish of those people to expect me to give up hours of my free time every day to answer them

I'm not a fan of combining them--that would require examining the state of the buttons before you know what the style indicator is displaying (if I understand you correctly). Giving a single GUI element different modes could cause confusion.

I can understand why you would say that but in-fact the opposite is the case (in my view)...
The reason being that the confusion you speak of is actually weather or not an object is selected...
If someone does not know if there is an object selected or the difference... this confusion can only be described as dementia... LOL
People who are used to these boxes going blank when they select nothing will be confused for 2 minutes probably...
Until they realise that they can actually see the defaults changing as they click on the palette.....
Currently if you click on the palette when nothing is selected (and no tool is active) then you are clueless...this is the confusing part of the current set-up.
This new way: as you click on colours the default properties change...which is actually an improvement i think....
But i can see how someone used to the current set up might be put off initially...
But there would be an icon next to it to denote this....
Which would directly relate to weather or not anything was selected....
its not confusing at all (to me anyway.)
