Hi guys I am new to inkscape and today I was following one of the tutorials when suddenly when I tried to select a square,ellipse or any tool my mouse pointer disappears and I am left with a small cross like a gun sight and a small version of the tool I selected. I have tried to get ridof it but to no avail I even uninstalled and re installed inkscape but it's still there and driving me nuts

So you're moving your cursor (which looks like this 
) and when you click over a shape your cursor looks like +[] (if the shape was a rectangle) (or +() if the shape was a circle).
When you click a shape does it select it ? (dotted perimeter and node shown as small boxes) ?
If so it looks like it's because inkscape receive a doubleclick rather than a simple click (don't know the reason)

hi vince that is exactly what it looks like I have even uninstalled the programme and re installed it with no effect

What is your platform ? windows ?
Did you install recently some utility to manage shortcut or to tweak your mouse settings ?
maybe look at %userprofile%\Application Data\Inkscape\ to see if there are remaining configuration files before reinstalling
