I had initially imported a rather large image. I already carefully drew some bezier curves on a layer above that image. It just occurred to me to replace the original image with a smaller size of it. So now I have the 2nd image ready to replace the one in the Inkscape document. Is there a function/button/etc to allow me to select the large image in the document, and tell Inkscape to replace it with the smaller one?

Thanks guys,

Welcome JDL!

Do you mean replace the imported image?  Or do you mean make the lines that you've already drawn smaller?

I guess you probably mean both, but I'll start with the imported image.  You can import the smaller image in exactly the same way you imported the first one (File menu > Import).

If you want to also make smaller whatever you're drawn so far, don't delete the large one yet.  It might be helpful in getting the drawing scaled and aligned.

And just let us know if you need help making the drawing smaller.

Assuming you didn't use the embedding option when you imported the image, right-click the image you want to replace and choose Image Properties... from the flyout menu.  In the Object attributes dialog box that shows up, enter the path and filename of the smaller image in the URL field.  The result is instant.

Bear in mind, however, that the smaller image will follow the dimensions of the larger image.  So if the smaller image doesn't follow the same height and width proportions of the larger one, the result will be stretched either vertically or horizontally.
