I'm trying to open a pdf image but the font is not appearing as it should though the font is installed on the PC and available for selection within Inkscape. (see attachment)

Any suggestions how to resolve? I've checked the manual and searched "font" here in community and haven't seen anything mentioning how to add a font to Inkscape or others experiencing this.

Welcome to the forum!

I'm not clear if you were viewing the PDF in Inkscape or somewhere else.  But my best guess is that you used Flowed Text, which really only works properly (a) inside Inkscape and (b) in SVG files.  If you dragged out a text box with the Text tool, and then typed in the text, you created Flowed Text.  If you don't remember, just select the text in the SVG file, and look at the status bar.  If you used flowed text, it will say so.  I'm not sure if it will be identified in the PDF

There are a couple of fixes for that.  1 - Convert to regular text, via Text menu (might have to reformat the text); or 2 - Convert to paths, via Path menu > Object to Path.

If the PDF will be viewed on different computers besides yours, you'll probably want to convert to paths.  That's because if someone on a different computer opens the PDF, and they don't happen to have that font installed, they won't see it correctly.  So converting the text to path will make sure that everyone sees it like you meant it.

However, once you convert it to paths, you won't be able to edit as text anymore.  So be sure you have the text exactly as you want before changing to paths.  And....well in this case, it's probably not a big deal.  But if it were a lot of text, you might want to save the text, as text, somewhere in the file, in case of future edits.

If none of that works, or seems to fit, would you be able to share the SVG file with us?  Then we can investigate better.

Thank you Brynn for you help. However, neither of those options helped get the font to appear as it should within Inkscape.

The image I am trying to open was created in ai and saved as a pdf as, apparently, SVG is not available as an option in ai. I am opening the image in Inkscape and, upon opening, the font does not appear as the font indicated, in Inkscape, in the font selection dropdown. I can change the font to other fonts within that font selection drop down and the font will change and appear correctly. However, the font I need to use does not appear as it should. So, I'm thinking there is some problem with Inkscape recognizing whatever it is it needs to recognize in order to render that font correctly. So, I guess my question is... How can I get Inkscape to render this font correctly?

The font is a True Type Font. Looking at the font file in Windows > Fonts, the filename is "Harlow Solid Semi Expanded Italic". However, it shows in the selection dropdown as "Harlow Solid Italic" (This is what shows as the "Title" in font file properties so may be a non-issue). I'm unable to change the font filename to test that. But, could this have something to do with it? ***I checked another font that has a different reference in dropdown from file name and it too does not appear correctly. I think I'm on to something here. But, ... still can't change the font filename. Hmm.....

My attachment in O.P. shows the inkscape window with the opened image, from pdf, on the canvas and a pasted crop of a .jpeg to the left. Opening the pdf outside of inkscape the font appears as it should.

Two additional items:

1. Checked known bugs and this issue does appear to be a known issue.
2. Opened pdf in another program where font did appear correctly and I was able to save as .SVG. Opening this .SVG file in Inkscape, the font still did not appear as it should.

Can I link to this forum topic for republishing in bug report? I think this .SVG issue is new information to the bug report I read.

Oh, I didn't realize it was made in AI.  I thought you meant you made the image in Inkscape from the start.

Oh yes, absolutely you can link it.  Congrats on finding your way to the bug reports on your own!  (we do a good bit of hand-holding sometimes, so it's nice not to, for a change)  Or you could upload your screenshots and/or files to the bug report, if it seems appropriate.

If you could share the AI file, some of us might like to test as well.

Also, if you could give us a link to the bug report, we could double-check if it seems to be the same issue you found.

I'm not sure about the font name issue.  I remember something about a problem if there is some odd character in the font name/title, has some negative effect.  I can't look into it right at the moment.  But I do want to investigate, because I've often wondered why so many of my fonts don't work in Inkscape.  I've always assumed that Inkscape is picky about fonts, and the font isn't made very well.  But maybe it's something to do with the name of the font, because I have noticed the descrepancy about the names, in file manager vs Inkscape menu.

I'll post whatever I can find out a little bit later.

Oh also - I think I have that font, it comes with Windows (or some other program I've installed).  But if you have a download link, could you share it as well?
