I have Inkscape version .48
I went to "New" then chose one of the business cards, made one, saved it in pdf format, and found that it only made one business card. Why is that?  Why did it not autopopulate? Also there is no print preview in Inkscape?

That's normal.  Templates don't have special properties other than to give you the convenience for it to set the dimensions (with guides/markers if applicable) of an illustration that it creates for you.  It won't create multiple copies.  What you were probably looking for and referring to is called a 'wizard' that handles the automation process of creating a layout for you that's suited for whatever task you ultimately wanted to do.

In other words, you will have to 'manually' make the layout yourself.  After creating a calling card, either modify the size of the document or create a new document so you can make duplicates or clones of the card, as well as draw cutting guides before printing them out.

You should also update to the latest Inkscape version, which is 0.92.2, if you can. Many things have been largely improved.

Good to know, thank you - where is the link for that?

There's a link on the index page of the forum.  But here it is, for convenience:  https://inkscape.org/en/release/

Maybe we should make Lazur's one-click solution into a template, and install into Inkscape - I mean so that it's part of the program?  Could even make one of them a parent, and all the others clones.  Maybe something like Jabier's Seamless Pattern template?  So that the user just needs to edit the parent card, and all the others are created automatically.  I guess it might need instructions -- telling which one is the parent to be edited, and to break all clone links, before sending to printer?

Maybe not installed with Inkscape, but uploaded to the gallery with good tags?  Not sure if I could manage it, but might try, if no one else does.

Keep in mind that there are a variety of sizes for business cards, just as there are for labels.  Each country has it's own size standards, even for regular letterhead paper sizes.  example, the US standard portrait letterhead is 8.5" wide x 11" height.
