After I add a new symbol, I realized that I made a mistake and need to edit it. However, I cannot click on the symbol and manually edit it like adobe illustrator.

Apparently, I need to convert the symbol to a group in order to edit. There used to be Object > Convert to Group command, but it's no longer in the current version. Maybe I should unlink (Shift + Alt + D) to do that, but how would I then convert it back to the same symbol?

I think we're going to need to see the file - I can't determine if you're working on a font symbol or something else.  However, it's my understanding that you can, in the current versions of Inkscape, do a group of a sole (one) object, just select it and choose group.  That might be why they dropped the convert to group command.  So give that a try, and if it doesn't work, perhaps attach a file or what the symbol is.

Use Edit > Clones > Unlink clone for converting symbols to editable objects.

That's a new one!  When did that happen?

As far as I know, you can't turn it back into a Symbol, after that.  You'd have to add the new symbol back to the symbol file/pack.  (which I don't know how to do, so if that's you're next question, just ask, and someone else can answer :) )

Just be sure you keep a duplicate symbol somewhere (like in a backup file, so you never lose the original).
