Hi,

I bought my first tablet and tried to use it with Inkscape. Tablet works only in Window mode, but then I can't see the cursor - so I can't see where I'm drawing  :(  If I try to set the tablet to Screen mode it always changes back to Window mode by itself. I have googled the problem, but I haven't found a solution. I have installed drivers for the tablet and tablet works fine with other programs - like Gimp. Can someone help me? :beg:

Inkscape version: 0.92.3
Operating system: Windows 10 Home

Welcome to the forum!

I'm not a tablet user, so I'm not sure if I can help.  But I'll point  you to all the options I know about, which need to be set.  Maybe some option needs to be set, before it will allow that one to work??

Edit menu > Inkscape Preferences > Input/Output > Input devices.  The last 2 options there pertain to using tablets.  So check those as needed.

Edit menu > Input Devices.  I think this is where you are setting the mode?  There's a checkbox at the bottom about using pressure sensitivity.

If you already have all of those set, then please be patient and someone else (hopefully a tablet user, but whoever) will be along to help.

One last note from me.  When you set to Screen mode, in Input Devices dialog, do you remember to click the Save button, at the bottom?

If that doesn't do it, we'll have to wait for someone with more tablet experience than me.

See if this message helps:  http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=33649&hilit=screen+mode

I know that user's problem is different from yours.  But it seems that changing that option, for them, allowed the Screen option to take effect.

I guess we don't have any tablet users around lately.  I'm not sure if that's the right thing either.  The other message says he was in the driver controls.  Your screenshot doesn't look like the driver controls.  But I'm certainly no expert, especially not with Windows 10.  Did you remember to restart?  (Sorry, don't mean to be rude, but some people, including me, do tend to forget from time to time.)

One thing I'm curious about.  What's the difference between Screen mode and Windows mode?  If the window is maximized, isn't it about the same thing?

I'm sure you're much more frustrated with this than I am, but it is puzzling, to say the least!

I restarted Inkscape and computer but it didn't make any difference. And I don't know if that is the right checkbox but I didn't find Windows Ink mentioned anywhere else.

The Screen mode is for the whole screen and Window mode only for the part of the window. In Window mode I can't use the pen to open menus or anything else. I can see little arrow heads moving on the rules when I move the pen but the cursor doesn't move. And I believe that Inkscape will move cursor in Screen mode.

Ok, I understand.  I guess I have to say I'm stumped, for now.

I guess that Options button in the bottom of your screenshot doesn't give anything helpful?  I'm really just swatting at flies, at this point.

Well, this should probably be reported as a bug.  It would be better if you did it, because you can provide all the needed details, and answer any questions which developers might have.  You can start on this page, to find out what needs to be provided in the report, and it will give you a link to the bug tracker, to make the report.  https://inkscape.org/en/contribute/report-bugs/  After you make the report, please put a link to it in this thread.

If you'd rather not get involved on this level, I don't mind making the report for you.  But I might need to contact you at some point, if devs ask for things I can't provide.  Or I might try posting to the Inkscape user mailing list as a first step.

Hhmm....out of curiosity, do you have pressure sensitivity in Inkscape?  That's the problem we usually hear with tablets.  Or is it hard to test without the screen mode?

I would be glad if you could make the bug report :)

The pressure sensitivity works fine on Window mode. And it would be just fine to use that mode if I only could see the cursor moving. But of course it would be even more better if I could set the tablet on Screen mode. Then I could use the pen e.g. to change the color in addition to drawing.

Can the pen and tablet both be set into screen mode?  Or is it just the tablet?  I was confused because that other message was referring to the pen settings.

No. Input Devices window looks like in the attached image. My pen doesn't have eraser.
- Wacom tablet is Disabled (I can't change it)
- Wacom tablet pressure stylus (I can set it on Window/Disabled mode)
- Wacom tablet eraser (I can set it on Window/Disabled mode)

Modes are Disabled/Screen/Window

Core poiter is on Screen mode and it can't be changed.

Ok, thanks for the info.

Very strange....

Oh wait!  Look what I found - I thought I should search before I post anything, and I found an existing bug report:  https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/1516428

Maybe that will work for you too, to manually make the change in preferences.xml ?
