Hide All But Selected?

Hi Guys,

I have searched everywhere I can think of and I can't seem to find the option Hide All But Selected, is it an option in Inkscape? I can't find shortcut keys or a menu option.

Hhm no, I don't think Inkscape has such a feature.  Sure would be handy!  I typically use layers, if I'm working on an image where there are a lot tricky selections.  Creative and thoughtful layering, so that you can hide a layer, and all its sublayers, in one click

Doesn't work by one key combination as far as I know, but you can try doing it "by two".
You can invert selection by !, hiding all selected then would need ticking in the hide option in the object properties panel (Shift+Ctrl+O). However the latter cannot have a key shortcut.

Masking/clipping could work a similar way to hide objects.
Invert selection, group objects together and draw a masking/clipping object on an empty area of the canvas, then use that for masking/clipping the group.

If you use the masking/clipping option, be aware that this would destroy any layer structure you have.

There has been talk on the user mailing list about someone intending to write an extension to hide multiple objects / all but selected.
You could ask there to see how far the user has come.

Hiding objects and clipping would seem to me unacceptable, when you consider the possibility of a button or key shortcut that would do it.

However, out of curiosity, I've always considered the option to hide an object, as an individual object hiding.  But if it would hide the selection....

Oh ok, now that I'm trying it.  If I select 2 objects, the Object Properties entire dialog is grayed out.  So it really is made to only hide one object at a time (or lock).

I think using Layers is the current best solution.  I used it extensiviely, on larger projects, and it's just become a regular part of  my workflow.  Although note that I'm not a professional, or really much of an artist.
