A wedge in a circle

When I create a circle it does it for me with a wedge. Using nodes only make it a line but I cant remove the line. How do I get rid of it or any other shapes that Inkscape remembers when I open a new file. Thank you!

Click on the round circle icon in the circle tool's tool controls bar above the canvas - the rightmost one.
