Hi Friends,
I've been working on upgrading the Home tab, which I often refer to as the Tutorials page. Now it will be the Resources page, and it will include extensions, and eventually other resources, such as templates, palettes, filters, icon sets, etc. Or....I know work has been happening on a theming system. I don't know if themes would be installed like those things, but if so, it might someday include themes.
I have all the known external extensions listed, and I've made a try at categorizing them. I'm using the current Extensions menu as a starting place for the categories. I've had to sub-divide some of them, because there are many similar extensions. For example, the Render category has several subcategories. Export has a few. And I've even added one - Animation / Presentations.
Anyway, I've done as much as I can on my own. If any of you have any extra time, it would be awesome if you could look over the list, and help me get the categories right. And it would benefit the entire community, to finally have them in one place and in a helpful format where users can find them. For clarity, here are the things I specifically need.
-- There's a large category at the bottom called "Unsure" which are those I have no idea, or at least I'm not sure exactly where they should go. I would like to put most of them in proper categories. If some are leftover, I guess there could be an "Other" category, to hold them. (There are a number of extensions which have no description, and their names don't help in understanding what they do.) (At least they don't help
me.)
-- Under Render, and also under Export, there are "Other" subcategories. Many of them can either possibly or probably be moved into other subcategories. So if anyone can move those into their proper place, that would be great.
-- And just generally, if you happen to notice any which I put in a wrong or inappropriate category, please move them. In many cases, an extension could fit into more than one. But usually it fits better in one than another.
I've attached the ODT file, which I guess most people should be able to open. If you have time, please feel free to edit, and upload an improved version.
(Don't worry about formatting in that file -- it's just my working list. That file won't be used on the webpage - just the info on it.)
Thanks to everyone who can help!!
Just for extra info, I would dearly love to have the kind of tag cloud system which blog software uses, so that visitors can just click the search or filter word in the cloud, to search the listing. As far as I've been able to learn, this would include a database, and I would need to install something onto the server, as well as certain code onto the page. But at least so far, I haven't found any kind of program which provides all this. It would need to be custom written. But if anyone knows of anything like that, please let me know.
(Just to be clear, I know that there are programs that will create a word cloud for artistic display. But those don't make automatic searches, or have any connection to the server. I'm not asking anyone to search for me -- just if you happen to know of something.)
Hhmm..... Maybe this is thinking outside the box, a little too far.... But what if I installed a blog software, and entered each extension as a blog entry? It would still just be links to wherever the extensions are hosted.... Probably a long way to go, just to get a tag cloud system! Plus, since the gallery opened on the website, it won't be long before the majority of extensions are there, and that blog would be obsolete.
