Interesting that (for me, at least) it's still only animated by opening.

Here too, but that's not a big deal if the full size is animated in my opinion.
The first attachment wasn't in motion at all.

I believe that attachments that exceed a certain size are shown only as forumware generated thumbnails. Clicking the thumbs should display original size and mime characteristics.
