cannot see new symbol library

I am trying to use the Component SVG library found here (http://www.gwoptics.org/ComponentLibrary/)
I installed the SVG file in /opt/local/share/inkscape/symbols.
When I do that , and I go to Object>Symbols... , then the dropdown menu "Current Document" shows a new entry called
"Unnamed Symbols".  However, there're no icons displayed, and apparently no symbols are loaded.
For all of the other choices, I see at least some icons and symbols.

Welcome to the forum!

I probably can't be much help here.  But until someone more knowldedgeable comes along, I could just confirm that you placed ComponentLibrary.svg file in in the symbols directory, and not the folder ComponentLibrary_svg.  (No offense intended, but we do see these things happen sometimes.)

Last comment.  If you install the symbol file in the Inkscape program directory (where I think you're intending to put it) it will only be available for the version you're using currently.  After you upgrade Inkscape next time, the symbols would not be there.  So to avoid that, you should install them in your Inkscape user directory.  I'm not sure where that is on Macs, but if you look at Inkscape Preferences > System > User config, that tells you where your user directory is (relative to where you installed Inkscape).  If you don't see a symbols folder there, you can just make one.

It's not formatted as a symbol file. Just open it and copy-paste, as the instructions for the SVG download suggest. Or use one of the sets from over here: https://github.com/Xaviju/inkscape-open-symbols

Moini, what does it take to format an SVG file as a symbol file?  Just curious

Thank you all for your replies. I indeed installed the correct file, but apparently it is not meant to be used the way. I was able to open the SVG file in Inkscape and the I could see the parts and copy/paste them.

I need to learn more in order to learn how to make them into a library.

One other beginner's question. Is there a way to set the forum preferences so that I can be notified by email when there is a response to something that I posted?

aryeh, click the Profile tab at the top, then under Modify Profile, click on Notifications.  There are several options to choose from regarading boards or topics where you have posted a message.

Also, you can individually subscribe to any board or topic (even if you haven't posted a message in it).   When you have a topic open, look near the Reply button (not Quick Reply).  Just above and just below the message thread, there is a row of buttons.  (The row of buttons is justified to the right.)  One of them is a "Notify" button.  (Besides Reply and Notify, there's also Add Poll, Print, and some others.)  If you click Notify, you'll get an email every time a new message is posted in whatever topic you have open.

To be notified for any new message in a particular board, open the board index, and you can find the same Notify button, in approx the same place.
