Can not get my saved files to open

I get this message when I try to open my saved inkscape files.  I have made sure my inkscape is set to open my svg files for default.  Has anyone seen this message or does anyone know how I resolve this.    lsthomas

Hi.

That is usually a bad news, pops up when your svg is corrupted.
Easiest way to check -and to "fix" the file- is opening the svg with a notepad and checking the </svg> tag at the end.
If it is not there, that means parts of it got chopped off while saving. (Those are objects of the bottom of the z-order.)
Then you would need closing the open tags like groups by adding </g> before the </svg> and maybe deleting a "chopped object".

If you share the file we can try fixing it for you.

You could also get that error message if the file is too large for Inskcape to load (given your system resources).

How large is the file and how much RAM in your system?

Here is the file if you want to try and see if you can help.  It is strange because it is four files that all were done at the same time.  Of course I needed them. :th:for your help.

Hmmm, it's only 21 kb file, but Windows Explorer show it as an invalid file.  Do you have any backups of it, from before the problem happened?

I tried to look at it in a simple text editor (Notepad) but it looks like some kind of traditional Asian characters or heiroglyphics.  I tried Notepad++, but that show other kind of bizarre looking codes. 

In any case, that file is completely corrupt.  I don't know as much about this as Lazur, but I don't think the file can be saved.  So hopefully you have a backup?

That file is nowhere close to an svg. It seems more like a pdf.
Hmm it's actually not a pdf either. Have to dig deeper.


Edit: no clue what file it was.

By saving as a new file you need to specify the svg format and not just name it as *.svg.
Though it seems more like the file was renamed to grad box.svg after saving it in a different format.
Probably if you change it back to its original format you could open it with better luck.

Hope you don't have locky on your computer?... The file is binary, and has no known mime type. To everyone: don't download, who knows if it's malicious...

Well, I've already downloaded and tried to open in 2 different text editors, and Inkscape too.  No security alerts.

Brynn and Lazur,  thanks so much for all your efforts.  Sounds to me like the files are lost.  I do sometimes save Inkscape files in pdf's and dxf.  I will definitely make sure I watch what I save.  Unfortunately I don't have backups on these files.

Inkscape has an automatic backup system, which some people find helpful.  See Inkscape Preferences > Input/Output > Autosave.

But even if it's disabled, Inkscape sometimes can make a backup in the case of a crash.  So if you had any crashes while working on the file, there might be a backup.
