I use a Mac Mini O.S. 10.10.5 connected to a Samsung SCX4300 printer. Using Inkscape version 0.91 I have created a family tree (text and straight lines) but when I try to print it, using either the icon in the heading or the keyboard (cmd-P) the printer flies into a tizzy. The status light changes from green to flashing red and the message window displays in rapid alternation the two messages "Ready" and "Add Paper" the latter appearing even though the paper tray is full. But if I transfer the page to the desktop (keyboard shift-cmd-4) I can retrieve it from there and print it (File-Print). This is a cumbersome process and degrades the sharpness of the print. What must I do to print directly from Inkscape?

Welcome to the forum!

Unforunately I'm neither a Mac or printer user, so I'll be short on help.  Inkscape does tend to be a bit weak on printing, in my experience helping people in all kinds of systems use Inkscape.  As far as I understand most people are able to find satisfaction by either saving as PDF, or using Print to PDF.

Would that be an option for you?
