Hi Friends,
It looks like the cycle to release version 0.92 has started.  I noticed on the mailing list that the alpha for Inkscape 0.92, inkscape-0.92pre0 has been released.  As far as I can tell, it's not packaged, and is only available if you know how to compile it.  Although maybe as a development version....  Check the Downloads page, if interested:  https://inkscape.org/en/download/

This also means a new About Screen Contest should be coming up pretty soon.  Get your artistic juices flowing, if you want to make a submission.  I think you have to use the development version for the contest, although the specific version for the contest might not be 0.92pre0.  But anyway, look for the announcements pretty soon!

The only thing they mentioned was a tarball, which I think means you have to compile it yourself.  I have these 2 links from the list:
https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/item/9591/inkscape-0.92pre0.tar.bz2
https://inkscape.org/en/download/source/
I don't see a compiled version for Windows.

When they get close enough to announce the About Screen contest, they'll have a packaged version, I'm guessing.

Oh wait, it just went from pre0 to pre1

https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/item/9633/inkscape-0.92pre1.tar.bz2

The message says they're in "String Freeze" whatever that means.

Quoting Bryce Harrington (lead developer, I think is the proper title)

Quote (selected)
I plan to continue post further pre-releases on a roughly 1-2 week
cadence until we feel the codebase is stable enough for the final
release, which would be late June at the earliest.

== About Screen ==

Hopefully a contest for the about screen should start up soonish?
In the interim, and as a contingency in case it doesn't happen, could
someone modify the 0.91 about screen to say 0.92pre?

It means they are not accepting proposals for new features for this release.

Judging from the devels, there will be a lot of new features. Loads of new stuff to learn.

I just saw the announcement for 0.92pre2(beta):

https://inkscape.org/en/download/source/

I haven't heard any definite word yet, but I think we might be skipping the About screen contest this time.  I'll try to find out more.

Where did you find that deadline, Lazur?  Maybe it's time to rest my eyes, but I don't see it on the instructions page.

I didn't see it either, that's why I asked about it on the irc channel.

Haven't checked if it was announced somewhere, but Moini's comment on the script font is also worth sticking.

"Draw Freely." should be written with Euphoria Script.

Yes thanks.  I already looked up a working link to download the font, posted here:  http://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?topic=436.msg3072#msg3072.  The site where the font lives, is apparently down temporarily, so I had to ask on the mailing list where to find it.

The reason I wondered about that, is because I thought it was the 8th (for some reason).  If Moini hasn't fixed already, that should be on the website!  I'll find out.

The font is no 'must', it's only that the Pushkin font is non-free, and Inkscape isn't using it anymore for that reason.
You can use any free (as in: open source and free to use, with a free-as-in-freedom licence, font, but if you want to do it exactly like Inkscape does it, use Euphoria Script.

The font is actually downloaded to your computer every time you visit the Inkscape website, so the website displays correctly.

The deadline is available in countdown format on the gallery page:

So, no 0.91.1 release first?

I don't think so, no... There hasn't been any official statement about the state of 0.91.1, but I don't expect it's ever going to be released...

But there are 122 fixes committed there, what happens to them?

0.92 has been forked from trunk later. Those fixes should be in 0.92, too.

Well, I've managed to narrow down my choice to 3.  But I don't know how to choose between them.  I guess I might have to look at the SVG files for clues.....although I'm not sure exactly what clues I might look for, or what they might mean.  Strictly considering as art, they are all amazing.  I'm not sure if individual techniques should matter.  I mean, I see technique as a personal choice, rather than an indication of accomplishment.

They always suggest trying to use or depict the new features for that version.  But last version's winner didn't use any of the new features (at least that I could identify by looking at it - I never looked at the SVG file).

I think only our friend from the Italian forum actually used any of the new features. Might also be a problem of availability - no OS X package, Linux users need to compile (and the prerelease actually doesn't compile, at least not if you follow the directions). I don't know about the Windows packages, they might have been ok.

Edit: referring to 0.92pre2 here.

A few mentioned using Envelope/Perspective LPE, including me.  But I think it was on text, in all cases.  (at least the ones I noticed)

I played around with Rotate Copies, but it was going to take me longer to learn how to use it effectively, than the contest deadline.  I really wanted to do a Kaleidoscope, type of design.  I wonder if that should be a consideration next time, to give a longer amount of time for the contest, for users to learn the  new features?

I used roughen lpe, mirror lpe and most noticeable the new blending modes.
Overlay and hard light was essential.
Still banding is present on gradients, hope 0.93 will get a better renderer.
Also used the improved bend lpe.

Would have used a new filter editor if there was any...

Since the contest I have used the perspective lpe alot and got some ideas on the guides.
As without improving on guideline usage it is either too complicated or eyeballing only.

Right, sorry, Lazur. I somehow forgot :-( I should download and 'dissect' your files some time, just to learn how the new blend modes can be used.

At least it's not that obvious since the thumbnail got fixed.
Because when the svg got rendered on site it showed bland colours without the shading in the right blending mode.

Yes, Martin has done some great work on the galleries these last days :) It's the browsers that don't support the blend modes :/

I played with the Blend Modes in my 2nd contest entry, which I ran out of time to finish.  But I'll save the idea for the next contest  ;)  I don't know if it will come out in the eventual finished version, but I've used the Hue blend mode in it.
