saving something as png should give transparent background or not? How do i get just the object without the white background so i can use it in PS?

You have to use File menu > Export PNG Image, and not File menu > Save As cairo png
  • Inkscape version 0.92.3

Best thing to do is to experiment :)
By default, the document background is transparent (see File -> Document properties -> Background color).
