Hi Friends,
I am SO happy to announce the opening of the
Inkscape Community Gallery!
Actually, it wasn't entirely my idea to set it up. Credit for that goes to spaventapasseri, who had suggested the idea to me, at a time when I was making the final decision about building this website. He had no idea that I was planning this site, at that time. But I agreed that a gallery devoted to Inkscape would be a great idea. So I told him about my plans for a website, and proposed adding a gallery to Inkscape Community. And here we are today!
Since the purpose of the gallery is to promote scalable vector graphics, Inkscape, its features, capabilities, and SVG's promise for the future of both the internet and computer graphics; I hope you all will want to participate, and help create an awesome and gorgeous gallery of Inkscape images.
Now that it's online, I'd like to ask Inkscape users how they think it might best benefit the community, as far as future plans. For now, we'll start with User Galleries, which alone I think will be a fantatic way to promote Inkscape. There is a category for tutorial-related images. And of course I have in mind a contest now and then. So there will be a category to contain the contest submissions. I'm thinking that if it becomes very popular, very busy, and very large, I'll want to start adding some galleries based on the subject of the drawing. For example -- cartoons, realism, technical drawings, abstract, sports, nature, logos and business, etc., etc. But that's into the future!
Meanwhile, if anyone has any ideas about how Inkscape Community Gallery can best be developed to serve the community, please feel free to post a msg on this board.
Our new gallery can be accessed from the IC Gallery tab. Like the forum, there are several themes available. Only the default forum theme has the matching default gallery theme. But in the interest of individual taste, you're welcome to choose. Registered and logged in forum members are automatically registered and logged in to the gallery. All members in good standing will be able to manage their own User Gallery, by creating albums and uploading images. Guests aren't allowed to open full-sized images (as an incentive to register) but otherwise have full access.
Here's a little guide I wrote, as an introduction, if you need help getting started. If you still can't solve your problem, please feel free to reply here, or post a new topic in this board.
It can accept all the common image formats, including SVG. However, it can't convert the SVGs to thumbnails. So there are some extra steps to upload a PNG, to be used as thumbnails. You can find those in the aforementioned guide. Please keep in mind that if you upload SVGs, most people will be able to see them....but not everyone. Also, browsers all have different capabilties for diplaying SVG. So, if you're viewing certain complex SVG files (or just large ones) you may not be seeing the entire image, because of limitations in your browser (not the gallery) (or Inkscape).
The gallery has multiple language support. According to the manual, it will auto-detect the default language of your browser, and present the gallery to you in that language. I have languages enabled for the nationalities of people I know in this community (those whom I have an idea about their native language, anyway). But there are many other languages available. If you don't see the gallery in your language, or have any other language issues with the gallery, please feel free to post a message, on this board.
Ok then, let's commence with the uploading....and enjoy!
All best
