Default Units not Global enough

Postby Old Grey » Wed Sep 28, 2016 7:59 am

If I select File/Document Properties/General/Default Units to lets say mm, some stuff doesn't change from default px.

Stroke style doesn't change.
Grid doesn't change
Transform/Move doesn't change
I don't know if there are others, but I use these a lot.

It's a bit annoying because I have to change it for every drawing, and the program that I use that uses svgs needs a lot of drawings.

Have you tried with Preferences instead? There should be enough room for customization and these would remain in all new documents.

Yay, got gird to change.

Inks is so massive it's hard to scratch the surface even after a year.

Stroke is another big one but nothing sticks out in Pref

No, it certainly does not sticks out but Stroke in mm does pop out after (proper) right click ,)

Thought you`d be able to change movement steps but it`s fixed in px. Still, have fun with this treasure hunt and chime back if don`t find it.

I tried this - only changed rect and ellipse - but stroke doesn't stick.

viewtopic.php?t=9258

I can change the stroke in the toolbox, but it doesn't stick when you reopen Ink.

It's good to have individual selection override, but global would be quicker. I do electronic part creation svgs and I'm constantly switching from mm to inch.

I'll have to give it a rest until tomorrow because my arm is aching.

The right click is for a stroke width on the status bar (bottom of the Inkscape window). At the top of that pop-up menu you may select mm. If you don`t change it here and do change it in the Fill and Stroke dialog or else - and then, while you work, you use the one from the status bar - it would change the value of the stroke width in px and not mm. In other words, you think you`ve set everything but when you use the status bar, 1 from that menu will be still in px and not in mm.

What you might find as the solution is opening the default.svg (...\Inkscape\share\templates\) and set everything as you`d prefer to see when you start Inkscape. When you`re done with customization just save that file. Of course, you may also name it differently and then call it from Document properties dialog.

I would have never found that.

Boo - I tried changing it to mm in both places and in doc prop, but a restart and it doesn't stick.

Yay - I made a template with only doc prop units changed to mm, and it sticks when you reopen the template. That kind-of solves some of it, but I still kind-of need the global change to save time because electronic parts are mixed inch and mm, which you might need in one svg.

I also found another bug. I downloaded a template that is in px so I changed the doc prop units to mm, but if I now go into Fill and Stroke the units are still px. I now save it and reopen that template, and all the units are changed globally to mm. It seams that File/Doc Prop Default Units is global only if it's saved and restarted.
