I'll explain what I'm trying to do, maybe someone can help think of a solution:
I have a large image, 22" by 17", which I want to output into 2 11x17 pdfs. I can easily do this manually, shifting the contents of the page relative to the page and saving as pdfs constrained by the page borders. Problem is the final project will have hundreds of 22x17 spreads, so I'd like to automate the process as much as possible.
I was hoping .91 would allow one to shift the page origin relative to the contents, but it doesn't appear to be possible.
Hopefully I've explained what I'm trying to do and someone will see the more obvious solution that I'm overlooking.
Thanks for reading.

Welcome to Inkscape Community!

Hhmm....  When you say "shift the page origin relative to contents", what do you mean, exactly?  Do you mean that you want the origin (0,0) to be somewhere else, besides the bottom, left corner?

Do you mean that shifting the page origin would prevent having to split the image onto 2 pages?

Why not just save to a pdf with a 22" x 17" page size? Adobe Reader can easily print a single page on to multiple sheets.

Isn't there something that can be done with the Guillotine extension? (never used it myself).

Hhmm, interesting.  I have never used it either.  And by the name, I thought it would be a way to cut the image in half.  But being in the Export sub-menu, it must have something to do with exporting an image.  My problem with testing it, is that the dialog does not make it clear how it's to be used.  And being a new extension, and the manual not being updated to 0.91 yet (need to push harder for an open manual!) I can't look it up.

From a vague memory, I searched IF, and found this:  http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5832.  And that leads to this:  https://code.google.com/p/inkscape-guillotine/ which is a fairly sketchy description of how to use it.  Now for a test....

Edit
What are "export hints"?

Holy crap!  I dragged out 4 guides, to define a rectangle that I wanted to export.  But it gave me 9 images!!  How do you tell it  which rectangle you want??

At the moment, I don't have time to look up the GIMP feature that this is supposed to be like.  I think I'll make a comment for the author, asking for more detailed instructions.  Unless....maybe the extension in version 0.91 is not the same extension as in that IF topic??

Well anyway, back on topic.  Until we hear some clarification form witchfindergenerall, I'm not sure if this would help.  It's the part about changing the orign that I'm not clear about.

Hello again, sorry for the delay in responding.
re: shifting the origin: I'd hoped there would be a way to edit where the 'page' is on the document so that instead of being an 11x17 at 0,0 I could have an 11x17 at 11 inches, so when saving as a pdf, an 11x17 'cut' of the whole image at 11 would be grabbed, rather than at 0. Not sure a better way to explain that, but I think it's a dead end anyway.
I attempted styxlawyer's suggestion and saved as a 22x17 pdf, which I then attempted to print through acrobat reader, but was only able to print the left hand side of the document. I suppose I could rotate the entire pdf to print the even pages but that is the kind of thing I'll end up doing as a last resort. I'd prefer to produce a pdf that I could give to someone, and they'd be able to print a copy for themselves easily, without any kind of weird instructions.
I've looked into producing the 22x17 pdf and splitting it using some other software, but it looks like that would be difficult even if I had access to a full copy of Acrobat, which I don't.

I just took a very quick look at guillotine's description, but that seems to export only as png's, although it is along the lines of what I'm trying to accomplish.

    Can you resist my finger?
I'll strongly recomend PDFsam for that automation process.
The thing is that Inkscape is best on make one by one page (save copy as file), not dealing with a lot of pages.

I have no experience using tools to manipulate headings within a pdf file.
At some time I might find time to write something funny at the signature line - for now I just gave the finger som resistance.
