Is the 64 bit version of Inkscape as good as the 32 bit version? Really there should be no difference but I'm having performance issues with the latest Inkscape.

Welcome to the forum!

When you say "latest Inkscape" which specific version do you have?  Sometimes people think they have the latest version but they don't.  So just to be sure.  :)

With version 0.91, there is a severe performance bug in the 64-bit version, which as I recall is not seen in the 32-bit version.  But the current stable version is now 0.92.1, and that bug has been fixed.  But that's not to say there's not a new bug that needs to be  investigated.  Let's gather some facts.

Since you titled this "crashes and instability", I guess you are considering those to be performance issues.  What makes you think they are related to performance, and not something else?  Yes, often crashing can be related to lack of system resources, or i.e. performance.  But not always.  For example, there are certain extensions which I can depend on to crash Inkscape, almost every time I try to use.  So can you list some of the specific things you've been doing when a crash happens?

Do you see the issues in every file, or just certain files?  Do they occur even in a brand new empty file, as soon as you start to draw?

Often crashes can happen when the file you're working on is too large for the system's available RAM to handle.  So if this is happening only in large files, that could be the reason for your crashes.  But otherwise, if you can share some details about what you're doing before a crash, we might be able to help you avoid them.

I'm on version 0.92.1

Maybe the problem was the plug-ins I was trying out for fun. I was also trying to edit text and turn text into paths.

Hhmm, if it was a ton of text, like a page full of text, I wouldn't be surprised if Inkscape crashed.  But for something like a title or banner, it would be unusual  to cause a crash.

Do you rememeber specifically which extensions caused a crash?  For me Add Nodes, Interpolate, and Perspective often cause a crash.  And some others, less regularly cause a crash.  I've learned to save my file before I apply any of those.  Sometimes, I have to do whatever I need them for, in a new blank file, and copy the result into the file where I'm working.  If I could pinpoint anything specific, I would report as a bug, but I've never figured out what the deal is with those.

Note that filters are famous for causing crashes too, mostly because they often eat up the RAM.

I have 8GB of RAM but even so. It must be the filters I was using when I was bored. Ok so Inkscape is pretty reliable on the whole, nice.

Here's some tips to help avoid performance issues:  https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=35

Because as soon as Inkscape's development gives it better performance or as soon as we get more RAM on our computers, we will still find ways to push the limits :D

I recently upgraded from 4 to 8 gb RAM (new computer).  And personally, that new gradient mesh tool is going to be my new limit to push.  Even my first test, with 2 relatively complex meshes, along with a couple of more simple ones in the file, I was getting the first signs of reaching the limits.  And there's SO much I want to try with the new mesh....

Anyway, have fun testing all the cool stuff!
