Can Inkscape do brush strokes with vectors?

Something like this image. Basically thin on the ends and thicker in the middle.

You can also add that effect to paths after they are created, using Path menu > Path Effects > Powerstroke, or maybe Pattern Along Path.

With Pattern Along Path, you can create your own custom "brush" strokes.  http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/Paths-LivePathEffects-PatternAlongPath.html  Or else there's a PAP extension which allows you to use groups for the pattern.  Extensions menu > Generate from Path > Pattern Along Path.

Hhmm, it seems the Powerstroke LPE isn't covered in the manual, but the tutorial here does:  http://fullcirclemagazine.org/issue-107/  Find the Inkscape article in that magazine.  It's a tutorial series -- excellent -- read them all, if you have a chance or want to learn a lot!

Side topic - Brynn, I just tried to access that article you link to in the full circle magazine, I can't get beyond the first page.  Do you have to have a paid subscription or something to access it?   The > button took me nowhere, and I went into the table of contents but they don't seem to be actual links.

Hi flamingolady, I'm happy to see you're back working with Inkscape again!  Did you open the PDF or the EPUB?  I always look at the PDF (click "English PDF").  The 2nd page is almost always the table of contents.  The Inkscape article is almost always in the bottom-left corner.  It is a link for me, but the "finger" isn't active until my mouse is in the very middle of the Inkscape chapter/article box.  Like if I put the mouse in the paintbrush, it's not a link.  Or like  Moini says, scrolling should work.
