I have a rectangle with no stroke and a 1:1 strip fill. I am trying to orient the stripes diagonally instead of vertically. The Fill and Stroke panel says "Use the Node tool to adjust position, scale and rotation of the pattern on canvas". However, the only nodes appearing in the node tool pertain to the rectangle itself and not the pattern within the rectangle. How then, do I use the Node tool to adjust the pattern? Thanks.

Zoom out. Somewhere on the canvas, there will be the control handles for the pattern. Most likely in the top left corner of the page area. You can drag them back into the object, using the one that looks like an X.

Just a couple of extra notes.  The pattern will have 3 handles, a tiny X (which Moini mentioned) to move it around, a tiny circle to rotate the pattern, and a tiny square, to adjust the size/dimensions.  Hold Ctrl when using the square handle, to keep dimensions in proportion.  Holding Ctrl with circle handle restricts the rotation to 15 degree increments.
