Hey,

Is it possible to turn an object such as a rectangle into a grid without any other workspace being a grid which I can make logos against?

I think I explained about grids in another message.  Did you try Extensions menu > Render > Grids, and Path menu > Path Effects > Construct Grid ?  Those can make grids which don't cover the whole canvas.  You can make them any size you want.
