I watched 2 video tutorials - in which the Interpolate-extension was used; and when I followed the instructions - all the dialogs were there - but nothing happened.
And now I tried most the "generate from path" extensions -- and non seem to work.

I checked a few other kinds of extensions - and some worked.

If you've been using it correctly (two paths (not groups, shapes, images, clones, text or other stuff), both are selected), and it still doesn't work and the status line doesn't give you a helpful hint, consider updating your operating system and using a current version of Inkscape.

0.48.3 is from 2012, and I don't think anyone still gives support for it.

I know this is the standard answer - "just start over" OR "replace your life"; and maybe it will work. But maybe it's suppose to work. I think that needs to be checked.
For instance - in the tutorial - he says he uses version 0.48; and it works for him; that's what the video is about. :-) Also - why would the options be there - if it wasn't developed yet for that version?

It might be broken, but I cannot check. I'm no longer using 0.48.3.

However, I will gladly help you with 0.91, 0.92.2, 0.92.x development branch and 0.93 development branch.

The tips I gave might already help - if they don't, then it seems it's broken in the version you're using, but I cannot - and won't bother to - test with a version from about 6 years ago. A test file and/or a screencast might shed further light on the issue.

There's nothing to make a screen-shot of; but what do you mean by "test file"?

Could you give us a link to the tutorial you're using?  Often when people are having trouble while following a tutorial, it's because the video is going too fast or you can't see the keystrokes which the author is using, or something like that.

I think I have a 0.48 version, so I could probably help.

(In the current stable version (0.92.2) I think all the extensions include tips for how to use them.  But in 0.48, certain extensions will only work if you do things in a very specific way or order.  The extension dialog doesn't give you a clue, like it does now - only the manual)

I'm straining my brain now, but for Interpolate....  No, I don't think there's anything special.  You just select both objects....I don't think Groups are allowed.  So let's say select both paths.  They have to be separate paths, and not 2 subpaths of one path.

For testing, I would set something like 5 steps.  Because if the file is very large, and you're asking for hundreds of steps between the original paths, it might just be taking longer than you expect.  So for testing, just try it with a few steps.

Also, 0.48 also has a bug which might cause the results of the interpolation to appear anywhere on the canvas, even outside the screen area, even in a brand new blank file!  To avoid that, create a new layer, and move the 2 paths into that layer.  Do you need instructions for that?

What Moini means by test file, is create a new SVG file which has only the paths that you're having trouble with, and tell us the exact steps you're taking, so we can try to reproduce the problem.  Or else make a video so we can see what you're doing.

I'm not going to need that, at least not yet.  I want to see the tutorial first.  And then you can try my tips too.  If we're still stuck, I'll might ask for a test file.

brynn:

----This is the video -
The first "exercise" he does - with the red rectangles -- is what I did.
I created both rectangles, selected them, turned them to paths, did everything in the dialog of the extension; and nothing.
I started from an empty canvas, and after clicking "apply" - I selected-all on the canvas (ctrl+A); and it says in the status-bar - that 2 objects are selected.

----I also had another strange behavior -- when making a circular clones array -- it's created on the opposite side from the + symbol (around which it's suppose to be created); I mean opposite from where the + is relatively to the first shape; thus the + eventually outside the circle of clones.
So it seems the program is weird.

Anyway - I would like to try to switch to a 64-bit Puppy etc; but I need a new screen, and to work some time for that, and of-course to set everything etc; so it's not going to be soon. So probably - until then.

Thank you.

Great!

Let me ask this.  After you click Apply, do you see a small window pop up?  Usually it doesn't last long enough to even display itself, but if Inkscape is working for more than a moment, it will say something like "Inkscape is working".  Sometimes it goes so fast that you can't really notice it.  Anyway, if you saw that, that's a good sign!

I started from an empty canvas, and after clicking "apply" - I selected-all on the canvas (ctrl+A); and it says in the status-bar - that 2 objects are selected.

That does sound odd!  Now I definitely need to see your SVG file.  If you would please, perform both of the things you mentioned - the interpolation and the radial clones.  Then save the file, and attach it.

I'm stumped about the interpolation.  I don't know if it would help, but I made a video.

One difference, I think you said you had 0.48.3 and it looks like I have 0.48.0

brynn - yeah, I see it works for you - doing the same as I did.
I'v tried several other versions, and almost went insane a little. :-p  Some not for my Puppy version - so they didn't work. One worked - and the same exact problem, even though it was 48.0. So I thought that maybe the problem is in the GSL; which you probably don't even know what that is. So I'll ask in Puppy's forum - if there's a newer|other version etc.
Thank you.
