Hi all,

I've just downloaded Inkscape for the first time and am looking forward to diving in!

I have setup the program with the required Xquartz. Though when I open Inkscape all the text in the program is slightly pixelated. I'm not meaning when inserting texts into a graphic but the actual text in the programs menus i.e. File, Edit, Layer, Object etc.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I have added a screenshot to show what i mean. Any help would be great!

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

Interesting....  This is not something I've seen or heard of before.  I can hardly come up with any questions.

I would ask if you consider this a high def screen.  But by the looks of your screenshot, it doesn't appear to be.  It looks almost exactly like my 14 inch laptop screen (except I'm on Windows).  Although at the full size, it really is much bigger than my screen.  I'm not sure if you zoomed it, to make the problem easier to see, or if that really is the size of  your screen (which is huge, to me - easily twice the size of mine ;) )

We have seen some issues somewht like this in high def or high res screens.  As far as I recall, it's expected to be fixed.....hhm, can't remember if it's the next upcoming point release (0.92.2), or the next major version release (0.93).

However, from what I recall, those problems affect all parts of the interface.  But the affected parts in your screenshot are only particular parts of the interface.

On Windows, I know that the text in all the areas in your screenshot are all part of my system theme.  So if you know the Mac system well enough look into however display themes are handled, that's one clue that you can track down.  Maybe a different theme would fix it?

Meanwhile, I'll do a little research into existing bug reports.  Maybe something will turn up there.

Rats!  I can't seem to find any bug reports about the high def screen issue, and I expect there should be a few reports about it.  I'm sure I've seen at least a couple.  So that could mean a couple of things.  1 - I just don't know the proper search terms; or 2 - it's already been fixed and is in the current development version.  Neither one seems more likely than the other, to me  :uhoh:

Although that brings up another question.  I'm not sure if there are any development versions of Inkscape for Macs.  I think only if you can compile or package, or whatever it's called on Macs, yourself.

Well hopefully someone else will have some idea about this.

And meanwhile, you can look into the theme, in case that theory might be correct.

I wish I had more info for  you.  If you have any other clues or ideas about the proble, they might help to lead us to the answer.

Yes, this is a hidpi screen.
2.560px × 1.600px to be concrete (the screenshots dimensions).

As far as I understand the issue, your screen resolution is too high for the user interface program that Inkscape relies on to work well with. We hope that this issue will be worked on (and perhaps fixed) for future Inkscape versions of the 0.93 series during the Inkscape Hackfest https://inkscape.org/en/news/2017/06/06/hackfest-2017-paris/.
