Howdy there, I'm trying out vector graphics as an alternative to pixel graphics for my newest game  project to change things up, and some friends recommended Inkscape, but so far I've had nothing but frustration :argh: unfortunately. When I try and switch tools using the tool bars, there seems to be a 25% chance my clicks won't do anything, especially it seems when changing to  :node: or :sel: for some reason, and when it does I have to then wait a minute or so before I can change anything on the top(like say change from edit node -> add node or remove node). Also when using tools like :3db: I am experiencing horrible lag.

Mind you this isn't like I start working, get a far amount done then start experience lag, no it starts almost immediately even with a fresh new project.
I've got 16 gigs of regular ram and 4 gigs on my video card so I don't think that I'm lacking in that department (especially considering my PC handles more taxing programs like Autodesk Maya perfectly fine)

My one suspicion is that I currently have inkscape installed on my ssd, which is pretty small (140 gigs or something like that) and has only about 10 or so gigs of free space at anyone time, mostly the OS and then just of my most regularly used programs(Maya, GameMaker, Unity). I seem to remember that Photoshop would use unused disk space as temp ram and that could cause slowdowns if there wasn't much disk space available. Does Inkscape do something similar? Should I move Inkscape to my storage HDD which has closer to 100 gigs of storage available?

Also I should quickly mention that I asked my friends who recommended Inkscape had any of these problems and they said no and they all  are using 2-3 year -old macbooks so maybe this is an OS issue?  :?:

Welcome to Inkscape Community!

Hhm, you don't happen to be using a dual or multiple monitor setup, by chance?

I'm not familiar with solid state drives.  But even with only 10 gb available, it would have to be a pretty large file to challenge it.  Are you opening large files?  Or so far, you've only tried new, blank files?

Umm, did you say which version of Inkscape you're using?  Oh right, in your title.  Try hiding the rulers.  For some reason, there's....I think it's called a memory leak when rulers are visible.  Iirc, it only happens with certain graphic cards (and only in the 64-bit version), but I'm not feeling terribly well atm, and I might have something mixed up.  But definitely try hiding the rulers.  (And meanwhile, I'll search for the bug report, so you can get correct info.)

I've only tried it with new blank files.
*Update* So I tried disabling the rulers and now some of the tools seem to work better! Tools like the  :pfh: :pen: :ct: work  without any delay or lag now and switching from those tools to others seems to work 95% of the time, but the tool bars up top still are mostly unresponsive and these tools  :node: :rect: :3db: :et: :twk: when selected I have to click  to my desktop then back to inkscape in order to change to another tool. Also I can really get the node selector to do anything other then edit already existing nodes (can't add, split, merge, or delete nodes)

Do you think installing the 32-bit ver fix any of these issues?

my gpu is a AMD Radeon R9 380 4gb so I don't think its my card

Hi.

Would suggest checking the bug tracker for the issue. Probably it's a known bug.
32 and 64 bit versions for win are based on different packages/cairo as far as I know -32 has an older renderer, not capable of displaying gradient meshes for example-.
It definitely worth a try, you can install separate versions on the same machine the same time.

Other option is trying out development builds -for those regular tools they intended to be much more reliable, with several bug fixes, though it's not recommended from the developer's perspective to suggest them for newbies. (Lack of documentation.)

For more info try the live board, sure Suv can direct you to the exact bug report.

Edit: if the chat is not available at inkscape's site, connect to #inkscape at freenode.

Sorry I haven't been around the last few days.

Installing the 32 bit version will definitely fix the issue with the rulers!  I'm not having much luck finding that bug report, but I'll keep my eye out for it.

But I'm puzzled with the remaining problems.  If you haven't solved it yet, can you clarify some things?

I guess you  mean the tool control bar?  The one that changes, depending on which tool you have enabled?

You didn't say, but I guess you don't have a dual or multiple monitor setup?  What about screen resolution?  Any unusual resolution or other uncommon display settings?  Or are you using some kind of screen magnifier, or other kind of accessibility feature of Windows?
