I have a Windows 10 system, latest version and updated to Inkscape version 0.92 from 0.91 64 bit. The perspective tool crashes this system and no longer works. What should I do to post this issue? Thank you.

Welcome to the forum!

You can start here  :)

First, we should try to solve the problem here.  If we can't solve it, and it's looking like a bug, then we can tell you where to report it.

When you say "perspective tool" do you mean Extensions menu > Modify Path > Perspective?  Or possibly you might be using Envelope extension, from the same sub-menu?  Or possibly Envelope Deformation LPE or Perspective/Envelope LPE?

Often when there's a crash using any of those tools, it's because you've asked Inkscape to perform something for which your computer system doesn't provide enough resources (primarily RAM).  Usually something with a lot of nodes.

First I would suggest trying whatever it is your doing, with something very small (I mean just a few nodes rather than dimensions) - like a rectangle or star (made from shape tools and converted to paths).  If that works ok, it's a strong clue that the crash was related to resources.  In that case, we can give you some tips about working with large files and avoiding a crash.

Can you provide the file which is crashing?  Or a similar one which shows the problem?  Also please tell us the exact steps which reproduce the crash for you, so we can test.

Hi and thank you for the warm welcome. Yes, it happens with the Extensions menu > Modify Path > Perspective. I have played around a bit with it and have been able to apply perspective to text without trouble. The popup perspective applet is blank but it does work on text converted to paths in not to long of a time period.

However, when trying to apply a perspective to text that has 3D effects applied, it won't work. Is this possible?

I want to experiment with the new effects added in this version. Thank you for getting back to me, I guess at this time, no need to go further with my original problem.

No worries about the popup.  I just says something like "Inkscape is working....".  It's often blank for me too.  I'm not sure why.

Hhm, text with 3d effects.  Can you describe how the 3d effect is created?  Is that vector paths that you applied to the text (with Inkscape or other)?  Or do you mean you applied an Inkscape filter to the text?

If you applied an Inkscape filter, then you would simply remove the filter, apply the perspective, and then re-apply the filter.

Inkscape is not a 3d modeling tool, so it can't display true 3d.  If it's an imported raster image, the Perspective extension can't work on it at all.  Only on vector paths.  If it's something you imported from Blender (a true 3d modeling program), I would say it's doubtful Inkscape can edit.  (Because I'm not very familiar with Blender.)  But it does use, and I think creates vector paths.  So possibly Inkscape could edit parts of it.  We'd have to see the exact item in an SVG file, to know for sure.

Hi, I created the 3-D effect using two text paths and the Interpolation Extension. When trying to use the Perspective Extension after this step, I end up having to intervene and stop the system process in Windows Device Manager. I think the longest time period I waited was about 5 minutes.

I haven't really played around with Inkscape's Filters yet. Is there a Filter that will create a 3D afffect? If so can you point to tutorial? Thanks again.

Oh ok.  In this case, I would try Perspective extension first, and then Interpolate.  Although I can think of a couple of ways you might have used Interpolate to make a 3d effect.  So I'm not positive it will work.

If you want to just trial and error on your own, that's fine.  But if you still can't do what you want, if you can show us, it would help us know what to suggest.

For filters, it depends on the specific 3d effect you want.  A lot of filters will make something look 3d or just have depth.

Someone needs to make something like this for the Inkscape website.  But for now, this is the only place I know where you can see what each filter will look like, besides from just trial and error.  http://www.littlewebhut.com/inkscape/graphics_filter_guide/  (Not sure how up to date that is)
