Hi, I have a problem with sending text to my signcut plotter programme. since the last couple of days the signcut programme doesn't see the upper case letter 'I'. So whenever now I send some text or object to path lettering the upper case 'I' is always missing ! I have now discovered that serif fonts export ok, it seems to affect only block non serif text ! Even Dom Casual is ok .I have downloaded some block text and they are affected too!
How can this be! I would appreciate any help in this matter, many thanks.....

Welcome to the forum!

I haven't heard of this problem before.  And I don't use any kind of cutter.  So all I can really do is use my own sense of troubleshooting, to try and narrow down the problem.

When you say that Signcut doesn't see it, do you mean that you can't see it in a preview?  Sometimes in Inkscape very thin lines, which are perfectly horizontal or vertical, can't be seen.  Then we just have to move a node by even just a fraction  of a pixel, and the line appears.  If it's a preview that you're seeing, maybe it has a similar problem?

Have you actually tried to cut something with a capital I?  If not, it's probably worth a test, because maybe the preview can't display it for some reason, but it would still cut properly??

Can you show us a screenshot of whatever you're seeing?

What file format do you send to Signcut?  Does it accept other formats which you could test (to try and find out if the problem might be with a file format).

Have you tried using another graphics program to send some text to Signcut (to find out if Inkscape might be the source of the problem, or if the problem is with Signcut).

And as far as the text, do I understand that all sans serif fonts have this problem with capital I ?

I guess at this point, I'm leaning towards this being a display problem with the preview.  But let's start with these questions and go from there.

Do you convert text to paths before you send to your machine?

Used to be cutting software was very picky about what you sent to it.  All cutting paths had to be defined with hairline strokes.  Special objects like Text couldn't be used, only pure paths.  Lately it is more forgiving and will make the paths for you.  Signcut is one of these.  It will accept Text as Text and not require it be paths.  It does other forgiving things, not really on topic, (like sort colors.)  I suspect something has gone wrong with it dealing with a text type.  Like Moni suggested, converting the text to paths should fix it.

Brynn, I suspect no file format is involved as Signcut installs a plug in that appears directly in Inkscape.  Selecting "Send to Signcut" from the right extensions menu  opens the design directly in Signcut, no export or import of files involved, though it can import other file formats if that fails, (svg eps ai pdf cdr ect.)

Thank you for responding to my problem. I will try cutting something, in case it is a display problem with the preview. Serif fonts the preview saw, the problem I had was with standard block fonts. I will also try another file format to see if that helps too.  Thanks all !

Hi, I am following up on a recent problem I had with serif and san serif fonts, importing them to my signcut programme for vinyl cutting. As previously mentioned the upper case letter i would not be seen in the signcut programme , but this only affected san serif fonts, serif fonts imported fine. I have attached a screen shot of what I am viewing, many thanks brushwrite.

Have you tried Object to Path before going to SignCut?

That could be a similar display problem to what I mentioned before.  2 of the 4 lines would be perfectly horizontal and the other 2 perfectly vertical.  Although I have to admit that it should be showing the fill.

You said earlier that you were going to try and cut it anyway.  Does this mean that it didn't cut the I ?

I would also want to know if you converted to path before cutting.  Some machines (well, their software) will cut text.  Others require that the text is converted to paths.  Even if yours will cut the text, it might fix the problem to convert it to paths.

I'd also be curious to see what a black-filled rectangle looks like, both shape and path.

Have you tried using another program to create the text, using the same font?  I'm just wondering if we can identify whether the problem is coming from Inkscape, or if the problem is with SignCut?  Do you have GIMP, by any chance?  Or any other graphics program which can produce text?

Thanks for your replies, yes the text was converted to path, I did try cutting it but a space was left where the I should be. It's weird because there was never a problem before. I have Coral Draw so perhaps I can try that if I am able to import to signcut, also I will try a filled rectangle too, many thanks.

Good luck.  I'll be interested to see how it works using Corel.  This is a strange problem!
